Laboratory Scientific Glassblowing

A Practical Training Method

By (author): Paul Le Pinnet (SOG Ltd, UK)

Email from prospective scientific glass crafter.

Hello Mr. Holden,

I found your email through the SGSANZ website and would like to ask you a couple of questions.

First though; my name is Nick, I’m a 24 year old Leadlighter currently based in Auckland and I’m looking to expand my training and career working with glass. I began working with cold glass in 2012, more recently becoming involved in operating the kilns (primarily used for glass fusing) and the acid etching of cast and architectural glass at my place of employment.

Would you consider Scientific Glasswork a currently viable career for a young person in New Zealand?

Do you know of anywhere in New Zealand or Australia offering training or an apprenticeship in Scientific Glassblowing?

Would I be better off pursuing training and/or employment overseas?

Any information you can provide would be appreciated.

Thanks for your time,
Nick Blackwood-Reidie
